The Active School Flag
As we are a very active school and participate in a huge variety of activities and have wonderful facilities and resources to allow us to do so. We applied for the Active School Flag and we were successful, there was great excitement when we were awarded our Blue Active School Flag!
What is the Active School Flag?
The Active School Flag is a Department of Education and Skills initiative supported by Healthy Ireland which aims to get more schools, more active, more often. The Active School Flag is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community.
In order to achieve the flag, we had to:
- Adhere to DES Guidelines regarding PE timetable provision for all pupils.
- Teach a broad and balanced PE curriculum.
- Inform and invite the whole school community to participate in the Active School process.
- Self-evaluate our current provision in terms of P.E, Physical Activity and Community Links.
- Plan and Implement improvements for each of the aforementioned areas.
- Organise an ‘Active School Week’ as part of the annual school calendar.
Fiona McHale from Active Schools visited our school to assess and she was very impressed with all the hard work of all the teachers, SNAs and children, whom competed in Feel Good Fridays, Climb the Heights, Road to Beijing, Run Around Ireland and many more initiatives. A special thanks to Ms. Quigley for being our active school’s coordinator. All children performed a whole school dance for Fiona. Very well done to everyone on this fantastic achievement!
Our school motto for Active School Flag is:
“Unplug for a bit and get fit!”
